Barbados Gears Up to Host CARIFESTA XV Under the Theme “Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence”

Barbados is set to host the 15th edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA XV) from August 22 to 31, 2025. The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, Senator the Honourable Shantal Munro-Knight, announced that the island is ready to welcome both regional and global audiences to the much-anticipated cultural event.

This year’s theme, “Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence,” reflects the festival’s aim to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Caribbean while showcasing its contemporary contributions to the global stage.

The event will be organized around three key pillars: “Where We Have Come From: Honouring Our Heritage,” “Where We Are: Celebrating Caribbean Excellence,” and “Where We Are Going: Building a Sustainable and Resilient Future.” These pillars highlight the Caribbean’s historical, artistic, and future contributions.

Honouring Heritage: Celebrating Caribbean Roots

The first pillar, Where We Have Come From: Honouring Our Heritage, will focus on the traditions and history of the Caribbean. Highlights will include the vibrant Opening Ceremony and Caribbean Street Parade, as well as the “Icon Nights” concert, which will pay tribute to the region’s cultural legends. Minister Munro-Knight emphasized that the festival would offer something for every Caribbean family, with events like the “Holy Train,” a spiritual sunrise gathering of dance, spoken word, and music, and “Sunday Food,” a culinary experience dedicated to traditional Caribbean Sunday meals.

Heritage Exhibitions will also be a major feature, offering interactive displays and research presentations on Caribbean history and identity.

Celebrating Caribbean Excellence

The second pillar, Where We Are: Celebrating Caribbean Excellence, will highlight the Caribbean’s ongoing influence in fields such as music, fashion, culinary arts, and literature. A range of activities will showcase the region’s dynamic cultural landscape, including Country Nights, which will offer immersive experiences of each participating nation’s artistic expressions, and the Grand Market and Trade Hub, a lively space showcasing art, craft, fashion, and cuisine.

Other major events include a Film Festival and New Filmmakers Bootcamp, which will spotlight both acclaimed filmmakers and emerging talents from the Caribbean. Super Concerts, celebrating Caribbean musical pioneers and contemporary stars, will also be a key feature, along with the “Pot Turn Down,” a street food festival offering a variety of Caribbean flavors.

Building a Sustainable Future

The third pillar, Where We Are Going: Building a Sustainable and Resilient Future, will explore how the Caribbean can preserve its cultural heritage while addressing challenges like climate change and economic sustainability. Minister Munro-Knight noted that this pillar would delve into the resilience of Caribbean culture and how innovation and sustainability can shape its future.

Events in this category include “Big Conversations,” a series of discussions on topics such as Caribbean identity, resilience, and cultural diplomacy. “Sustainability by the Sea” will focus on eco-friendly initiatives like beach clean-ups and sustainable cuisine. Additionally, the CARIFESTA Business Forum will offer panel discussions on cultural entrepreneurship, licensing, and the creative industries.

The UWI Symposium, which will address the intersection of culture, technology, and sustainability, and a Wellness Day exploring traditional Caribbean wellness practices, are also expected to attract attention.

A Celebration for All

Minister Munro-Knight emphasized that CARIFESTA XV will not only be a celebration for the Caribbean but also an ideal experience for international tourists eager to explore the region’s cultural richness. She highlighted that CARIFESTA has served as a cornerstone of regional unity for over fifty years and remains a powerful reminder of the Caribbean’s resilience in the face of challenges like climate vulnerability, economic inequality, and social intolerance.

“CARIFESTA remains the uniting event that reminds us of our innate resilience through our shared love of Caribbean culture,” the Minister remarked.

With the festival set to offer a diverse and engaging array of events, Barbados is ready to showcase the Caribbean’s global excellence and cultural heritage to the world this August.
