Drewzy Stands Unshaken: Seven Challengers Fall as the Young King Reclaims the Calypso Crown

The Carib Senior Calypso Monarch Finals delivered exactly what Sugar Mas promises at its highest level – sharp commentary, commanding performances, and the unmistakable electricity that only calypso’s grandest stage can generate. Before a packed audience and under the bright lights of one of Carnival’s most revered competitions, the art form once again proved why it remains the heartbeat of Caribbean expression.

Seven calypsonians mounted a fierce and fearless challenge, each taking the stage determined to unseat reigning monarch King Drewzy. Lyric by lyric and verse by verse, they gave the audience a spirited battle worthy of the Sugar Mas stage.

In the end, however,  it was not to be. With composure beyond his years and a performance that resonated from first note to final refrain, the young calypsonian secured his second Senior Calypso Monarch title in just his second appearance in the arena, cementing his status as one of the most formidable voices of his generation.

The final scores reflected just how fiercely competitive the night was. King Drewzy secured the Senior Calypso Monarch title with a commanding 769 points, reaffirming his dominance on the Sugar Mas stage. Close on his heels was Socrates, who delivered a powerful showing to claim first runner-up with 752 points, while Queen Independent rounded out the top three with 722 points, earning second runner-up honours.

One of the undeniable highlights of the evening came during a break in the competition, when the legendary Lord Nelson took the stage. At 94 years old, he proved once again that age has done nothing to dull his command or charisma. With effortless charm, he belted out several of his most beloved classics, his voice still rich, still confident, still carrying the weight of decades of calypso excellence. The crowd responded in kind-singing along, smiling, dancing and soaking in the rare privilege of witnessing a living icon in his element-reminding us all why his music has stood the test of time.

The Senior Calypso Monarch stage also celebrated the next generation of calypso brilliance, with reigning Junior Monarch winners Coryn Clarke (Primary) and Mighty J (Secondary) stepping into the spotlight as guest performers. Coryn electrified the audience with her boundless energy and stage presence, delivering a performance that was as joyful as it was commanding. Mighty J, meanwhile, held the audience spellbound, his voice powerful and polished, drawing sustained applause for its clarity, strength, and emotional depth. Together, these performances created a beautiful throughline-past, present, and future of calypso sharing the same stage, reminding us that the art form is not only alive, but thriving.

As the curtains fell on the Senior Calypso Monarch Finals, one truth rang unmistakably clear: calypso is in powerful hands. From Drewzy’s assured reign at the pinnacle, to the enduring brilliance of legends like Lord Nelson, and the fearless promise embodied by the next generation, the Sugar Mas stage became a living testament to the art form’s resilience and relevance. In that shared moment—where crowns were defended, histories honoured, and futures unveiled, calypso once again affirmed its place as the cultural, conscience, and the enduring voice of the people.
