Getting Real With Globey, The Global Carnivalista

Global Carnivalist is embodiment of the authentic Carnival spirt. With an unwavering commitment to promoting cultural exchange, unity, and the pure joy of carnival celebrations, Globey, as she’s now known to her thousands of adoring fans, has become a symbol of the global carnival community.

Her unwavering love for all things Carnival prompted the birth of this brand which has now grown to international acclaim.

YCG caught up with the woman at the heart of the Global Carnivalist operations for this instalment of Getting Real…

YCG: Who/what is Global Carnivalist?

GLOBEY: Global Carnivalist, the brand is the masquerader & chaser of carnival euphoria.

YCG: Tell us a bit about what prompted the start of this brand?

GLOBEY: I started GlobalCarnivalist.com in 2015, carnival info was scarce, and I wanted to document my carnival travels and planning. Simply opting to blog my experience has grown into a brand that has allowed many others to use my experience as a guide for their own.

YCG: To what do you credit the success of your brand?

GLOBEY: Consistency and optimal timing.  I blogged consistently even when my numbers were low, i posted on instagram when i only had 40 likes, my brand grew because i kept showing up.

YCG: Finish this sentence: Carnival is…

GLOBEY: Carnival is Euphoric!

YCG: To those who don’t know better, Carnival is just about feathers and beads, wine and jam. What do you think should/could be done to dispel the myths surrounding this festival?

GLOBEY: I don’t think you can dispel it per say but i believe consumers of carnival should do their due diligence and share other elements when posting their carnival photos and videos. share masqueraders in traditional wear, share the tourism events, attend events in savannah park (or the local carnival village); we are the storytellers of our carnival experience based on what we post. Showcase the cultural and traditional elements, not just the sexy costumes and hypnotizing dancing if you care about how outsiders view Caribbean carnival.

YCG: You were born in Trinidad but have been blessed to have experienced Carnival around the world. Can you share one of your most memorable carnival experiences?

GLOBEY: Trinidad Carnival is still my most memorable carnival experience. Year 2014 and 2016 specifically, the music was so good and the vibes was insane.

YCG: What do you love best about carnival?

GLOBEY: How it allows you a space to express yourself creatively through clothes (like Monday wear) but also shed worries and embrace music and others. It is one of the few spaces where strangers can feel like family because you’re bonded in the shared experience of soca and carnival revelry.

YCG:  What if anything do you think could/should be done improve the overall Trini carnival experience?

GLOBEY: I am aware that experiences must evolve so there isn’t much I would add, paying homage and keeping in mind why carnival started in the first place however is essential. It should remain an inclusive experience.

YCG: We’re counting down to Carnival 2024, care to share your top 5 must-attend events?

GLOBEY: Definitely choose a DDI boat ride experience, you get to see another side of Trinidad.

I would also visit a pan yard while there (or panorama finals), it feels like carnival love there. Soca Brainwash of course, you can expect to be wowed by the decor and vibe of the crowd also give J’ouvert a try and make sure you experience an all-inclusive breakfast fete.

YCG: Songs are being released at a feverish pace. Which are your favs so far?

GLOBEY: It’s too early for a fave, while I don’t have any yet I am looking forward to Kerwin Du Bois’ and GBM Nutron’s hits this year.

YCG: Are you satisfied that enough is being done to preserve the authenticity of Trini carnival?

GLOBEY: Yes and no. More people under 40 need to involved in the direction and vision of carnival to ensure the experience is modern but elements of old mas need to be retained under the guidance and storytelling of the elders. I see soca artists like Mical Teja including old school elements in his music so its possible to ensure the authenticity keeps thriving. We just need to be intentional and remember its not only about the financial bottom line.

YCG: What are your carnival must-haves? The things you need to ensure you have an epic road experience…

GLOBEY: Sunscreen, vex money, an open mind and joyful spirit.

YCG: How many Carnivals do you usually participate in every year?

GLOBEY: About four on average.

YCG: Any words of advice for first time masqueraders?

GLOBEY: Build your stamina, this is a marathon not a sprint

YCG: What does your post-carnival recovery regimen look like?

GLOBEY: A lot of stretching, taking zinc and hydrating my body. You sweat a lot and interact with others  so it is easy to come back feeling sick. Taking care of myself & boosting my immune system is important to me

YCG: Is there any global carnival you’re yet to experience that’s on your wishlist?

GLOBEY: Saint Vincent’s for sure

YCG: What’s your favourite soca song of all time OR which Soca song is guaranteed to get you in full party mode almost instantly?

GLOBEY: Machel Montano’s Haunted
