High Praise For Patrice Roberts’ I Am Woman

Despite being left outside the stadium for at least ninety minutes after gates were supposed to open, patrons seemed to have the time of their lives at Patrice Roberts’ I Am Woman.

Your Caribbean Guide understands the delayed opening of the gates and subsequent late start of the show, were as a result of fire and police checks being completed later than anticipated.

When the gates finally opened around 9:40pm, it was obvious that the massive crowd was ready to party. No time was wasted.

DJs kept the vibe up and the energetic crowd entertained until Patrice descended (yes literally) to the stage around 10:40pm.
She started her set with Anxiety.

Once her introductory set was complete, Patrice ushered a steady stream of artistes on stage.
Dong Dong, Led Piper, Olatunji, Farmer Nappy, Pumpa all delivered performances that were well-received by the exuberant crowd.

Speaking with YCG backstage after his performance, the A-List captain said he’s observed a shift in the fete culture here in Trinidad and Tobago. He said this could be attributed in part, to the increased volume of “upscale” events.

Also commenting on the issue of evolving fete etiquette was renowned Canadian DJ, Dr Jay. He said the love for the music isn’t what it once was.

As the night progressed Patrice continued to wow her adoring audience with her expansive catalogue, her multiple wardrobe changes, and energetic performance.

What resonated most with those present though, was the apparent show of strength in the face of remarkable odds. Many marveled at the fact that she was able to produce and headline such a remarkable show while battling grief following the untimely passing of her fiancee, Ricardo Drue.

Everyone present was taken by surprise when an AI version of the late artiste appeared on screen with a message for Patrice.

“I want you to know that I am ok and I’m proud of you. Don’t cry for me. I want you to take care of yourself and continue being a great mother to our daughter and my boys. I love them all. To my family, friends and fans I miss you all and appreciate the love you have shown,” AI Drue said.

Seemingly overcome with emotion, Patrice hurriedly exited the stage. At this juncture, Teddyson John continued the tribute to Ricardo Drue. He was joined by the dancers from Antigua known to work with the artiste prior to his passing.

The appearance of Drue and the message he delivered was met with mixed reviews. Members of the audience could be seen wiping tears away while they voiced heightened support for Patrice. Others though, were shocked and left feeling a bit uncomfortable after the unexpected interlude.

“It’s a no for me,” one woman was heard saying. “Pay tribute to the man if you want to but this talking dead person thing? No thanks.”

This sentiment was echoed by countless others who posted their thoughts on social media.

“Huh?! So very ‘the voice is coming from beyond the grave…’ no say!” One man posted.

Another said event promoters should think twice about including Obeah.
“What kind of obeah is this?! Dead man talking? I didn’t leave my house for this… the promoters have to consider that not everybody like them kinda thing man. Doh tell me this is just technology because to me this kinda technology is just obeah.”

Though divided on the issue of the use of the appearance of the AI generated Drue, those who attended, stood united in their enjoyment of the four-hour-long show.

Attendees were promised performances by over 20 of the industry’s finest and organisers were sure to deliver.

Adam O, Kees, Mela Caribe, Problem Child, Voice and Jamelody were among those on the star-studded cast.

Patrice profusely thanked her fans, saying she was grateful for their support and happy to know that they had her back. She said the fact that they stood and waited from 7pm until the gates opened over two hours later is proof of that.
