Island-Made Magic: Spotlight on Veronica, the Creative Genius behind Sassy V Collectibles
When I sat down with Veronica Julius-entrepreneur, designer, and the spirited force behind Sassy V Collectibles, I knew I was in for a treat. What I got was a masterclass in Caribbean creativity, fearless reinvention, and the raw passion it takes to build something special from scratch- all this from a woman with a big heart, living on a small island.
Veronica, born and raised right here in Saint Kitts, launched Sassy V Collectibles back in October 2015. As she tells it, the name just came to her, a nod to her own personality and a brand identity flexible enough to hold everything from custom handbags to journals, t-shirts, skincare, and even a published poetry collection.
“I felt like I was a little bit sassy,” she laughed. “…and then ‘collectibles’ meant I didn’t have to just stay doing bags, I could branch off into different things that still had the core of being confident and about self-care.”
That confident individuality defines the Sassy V aesthetic. No two pieces are exactly the same, and that’s by design. Her handbags, often released in single or limited quantities, are bold, authentic, and deeply expressive. They draw inspiration from nature, emotion, and Veronica’s own fearless fashion sense. “It’s about being different,” she explained. “Most of the time we do one or two of a style, and even if it’s three, they’ll be in different colors. I just want you to walk into a room and know that nobody else has your bag.”
From Flat Shoes to High Style
Veronica’s love for fashion began early. “When we were younger, we got a lot of hand-me-downs. But to not make them look like hand-me-downs, I’d add a belt, a bow in my hair… I just always wanted to look like a Barbie doll,” she said, reminiscing. One childhood memory stands out: a jean outfit from her grandmother that looked so good, she defied orders and snuck out to a sporting event just to wear it.
It’s that same boldness that eventually pushed her into entrepreneurship. “When I started, I couldn’t even make a bag,” she admitted. “But I knew I wanted something different—something nobody else had.” Unemployed at the time, a friend encouraged her to start selling her pieces. “I thought, these are weird,” she laughed. “But I did it. And it just happened.”
Inspiration, Innovation & Island Hustle
Of course, like any Caribbean entrepreneur, Veronica has faced her share of hurdles. From convincing people to embrace something outside the norm, to sourcing materials that help keep her designs one-of-a-kind, the challenges are real. Shipping and scaling her brand regionally and internationally remain top priorities. But she isn’t deterred.
“The highlight of this journey is definitely the customers,” she told me with a glowing smile. “When I see someone walking around with a Sassy V bag, and they tell me how it makes them feel—it’s like I’m on cloud 15.”
As we chatted, her humility shone through. “Knowing what I know now,” she said, “I would’ve taken more risks. I played it small sometimes because I wasn’t sure. But now I know—I’d jump sooner.”
Sassy V: More Than Bags
What’s remarkable about Sassy V is how the brand reflects Veronica’s layered identity. Yes, it’s about fashion, but it’s also about affirmation, empowerment, and telling stories—whether through journals, poetry, or skincare. Her affirmation tees uplift. Her journals speak to self-reflection. Her soaps and body butters say, “Take care of you.”
Her bestselling feather bags have become iconic. “We don’t repeat designs,” she said. “The only thing we bring back in different colors is our signature feather bags. They’re the most popular, but once a design is gone—it’s gone.”
Entrepreneurship as Empowerment
One thing Veronica made clear during our chat: this isn’t just a business, it’s a legacy. “Everything I do is to inspire my children,” she said. “I want them to know they can do it—no matter what they want to do.”
And yes, balancing business and motherhood is a challenge. “It’s hard running a business from home, parenting a teenager, and still taking care of yourself,” she admitted. “But it can be done.”
Her advice to young creatives? “Go out and do it—even if you doubt yourself. Jump. Do it anyway.”
And as for concerns about people copying her work? Veronica remains unbothered. “There are millions of people in the world,” she shrugged. “Fashion is always revolving. We all learn from somewhere.”
