#IslandInsight: Celebrating Island Elegance With Saint Kitts’ Jewellery Artisan, Ria

Port Zante is one of my favourite places on the island of Saint Kitts, especially when it’s bustling with activity and business as local entrepreneurs interact with excited cruise tourists.

During a recent visit to the tourism hub, I happened across a designer who is crafting wearable treasures, inspired by the islands natural beauty. Using materials like sea shells and sea glass, she transforms pieces of the coastline into stunning, one-of-a-kind earrings.

As a third-generation artist, her creativity flows from a rich lineage, following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother. Each accessory she creates is not just a piece of jewellery but a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship, and the natural wonders of her island home.

And what beautiful creations they are! What was meant to be a quick visit to Port Zante was extended as both my daughter and I found ourselves enthralled by Ria and her amazing work.

The designs… the colours… the artistry and Ria’s obvious passion for creating these masterful pieces of art, proved to be a potent combination that left us spellbound. For at least thirty minutes we stood there, chatting and going through her vibrant display. I knew I had to get a piece or two, but it was almost impossible to decide which ones…

Ria said she will be eternally grateful to God for her talent and to her mother for being the conduit through which she was inspired to position her creativity at the heart of her professional pursuits.

Asked what sets her creations apart from those of other local designers, Ria said the fact that most of her materials are sourced locally…

Ria said hers is a consistent labour of love but the most difficult part is deciding how to use the pieces at her disposal…

She said she’s filled with an immense sense of pride every time a visitor to the island visits her stall, gushes over her remarkable work and purchases pieces to take with them.

She said she’s happy that through her work, tourists can take a tiny piece of her island home along as they continue their journey.

The importance of supporting local businesses can not be overstated. If you’re looking to add a few more pieces to your collection visit ria’s booth at the Amina Craft Market on Port Zante.
