Jalessa Lazarus Set to Shine in Junior Soca Monarch Semi-Finals with New Single ‘Waistline’
Trinidad and Tobago’s rising Soca star, Jalessa Lazarus, is gearing up to perform in the highly anticipated semi-finals of the Junior Soca Monarch competition. The 14-year-old’s latest release, Waistline, is making waves this carnival season. Written by Jason ‘Shaft’ Bishop and produced by Millbeats Entertainment, the track delivers a message of youth embracing the joys of carnival, all while celebrating the art form with consciousness and respect.
Jalessa’s journey in the music world goes hand in hand with her dedication to academics and other performance arts. Now enrolled at a private secondary school, she balances her studies with her music career and an array of creative pursuits. Her mother, Phylicia Lazarus, shared, “I enrolled Jalessa in a private secondary school after realizing how overwhelming it was for her with 18 subjects. Now, she has the flexibility to focus on the subjects she truly enjoys.”
The support of Jalessa’s family has been crucial in nurturing her talent. Alongside her schooling, she has received professional training in guitar, vocals with Tiffany Paul, piano lessons with Kevin Millien, and dance at Xtreme Dance Academy. “As a parent, it’s important to step in and ensure my child’s well-being while encouraging her to follow her dreams,” Phylicia explained.
For Jalessa, her journey is filled with inspiration from her peers and the energy of the local music scene. Surrounded by rising stars like Yung Kymani, Wizabella, and Zachary Ransom, she feels an unwavering sense of camaraderie. “We’ve got each other’s backs, and no matter what, we’re all winners,” said the young Arima talent.
Looking ahead, Jalessa is excited for her upcoming performance at Kinds Carnival Kingdom and the release of an upcoming collaborative single with another young artist. “I’m eager to perform, share my talent, and engage with audiences,” she said. Her ambition is clear: to continuously improve and always deliver her best.
Jalessa’s musical influences are rooted in Soca legends like Preedy, Patrice Roberts, and Voice, and she hopes to collaborate with them one day. Thanks to the guidance of her family and mentors like Kevin Millien, Jalessa is carving her own path to success in the music industry.
As a young artist, Jalessa has also faced challenges, including bullying. Phylicia shared that Jalessa was targeted by classmates about the death of her father, who passed before she was born. “I reassured her of her worth and explained that bullies need love,” Phylicia said. Jalessa hopes that the issue of bullying can be addressed with greater intention by both schools and authorities.
In addition to her music career, Jalessa will be participating in a meet-and-greet event at Solange Fashion, East Gates Mall in Trincity, on February 23rd. This event offers younger fans the chance to interact with the talented singer. Phylicia encourages all parents to support their children’s talents early. “Don’t wait until they’re older—support them now. Gifts always make a way for those who possess them,” she emphasized.
As Jalessa prepares for the Junior Soca Monarch finals on February 25th, she’s filled with excitement and gratitude for the support she’s received from the people of Trinidad and Tobago. “I’m as ready as I’ll ever be, and I’m truly excited to be part of this incredible carnival experience,” she said, eager to showcase her talent on the grand stage.
