Machel Returns To His Roots With The Release Of “Soul Of Calypso”

Machel Montano fans were thrown into a frenzy on Wednesday when news broke that he had released his first song of the season.

While it wasn’t the usual style of music that the Soca Icon is renowned for, people just seemed happy to have at least one MM offering to take them through the season.

“Soul of Calypso” signals Montano’s return to his Calypso roots.

In a message posted on social media, the Soca star said:

“Calypso is where I started and I felt a real joy composing and creating this one as I thought about the roots of soca and all of the evolving forms of our music that continue to flow from the Kaiso fountain. Calypso started with Kalinda and Cariso back in the Barrack yards and has evolved to be known around the globe.”

He is scheduled to perform at the Little Carib Theatre on Thursday night.

Machel is currently pursuing his MA in Carnival Studies at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. Last year he announced plans to prioritise his studies, which he explained, meant he wouldn’t be as focussed on Carnival.
