
Morgan Heritage Lead Singer, Peetah Morgan, Dead At 46
Reggae music lost one of it’s most prominent icons today.
Peetah Morgan, the lead singer of famed group Morgan Heritage, has died.
His passing was confirmed in a statement issued by the family.
“It is out of sincere love that we share that our beloved husband, father, son, and brother and lead singer of Morgan Heritage Peter Anthony Morgan has ascended today, February 25th, 2024. Jah come and save us from ourselves because love is the only way.”
Peetah Morgan was born on October 7, 1977, in Grange Hill, Westmoreland, Jamaica, into a family deeply rooted in music. He was the eldest of the famed reggae group Morgan Heritage, which comprises his siblings Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan, Gramps Morgan, and Una Morgan. From a young age, Peetah was immersed in the rich melodies and rhythms of Jamaica, laying the foundation for his future musical journey.
Formed in 1994, Morgan Heritage quickly gained traction with their soul-stirring harmonies and socially conscious lyrics. Peetah’s soulful vocals and commanding stage presence played a pivotal role in the group’s ascent to stardom. Their breakout album, “Don’t Haffi Dread,” released in 1999, catapulted them onto the international stage, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated global fan base.

When news of his passing broke today, scores of his comrades in music took to social media to share their thoughts and condolences.
“I’m just fked up right now, period,” Buju Banton posted on Instagram.
Reggae singer Romain Virgo posted “My heart is broken. I’m just lost for words fam.”
These sentiments were echoed by Ziggy Marley who posted:
“Really saddened to hear the news today family Peetah move on from this sphere. Sending all our love and condolences to Morgan Heritage and family. Our community will miss him bad bad bad. Jah know.”
Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness was among those paying tribute to the late artiste and social activist.
“My heart is heavy to learn of the passing of Peetah Morgan of the world-renowned Morgan Heritage,” he posted.”
“I send my deepest condolences to the Morgan family as they grieve this tremendous loss which is also a colossal loss for Jamaica and for Reggae music. Our country is grateful for his life and contribution and the sharing of his exceptional musical talent which touched each of us. I pray for the family’s peace and comfort during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport said she is shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Peetah’s passing.
“It was not so long ago in 2022 that I was assisting with funeral arrangements for his father Denroy Morgan and now to lose Peetah who was only 47, it’s really heartbreaking. Led by Peetah, Morgan Heritage won three Grammy Awards and the Group has had major hits such as Don’t Haffi Dread (To Be Rasta), Down by the River, She’s Still Loving Me, and Reggae Bring Back Love. We honoured them at the 2023 Grand Gala at which they also performed. My sincerest condolences to his wife Marie, the other members of Morgan Heritage Group and other siblings, the rest of the family, relatives, friends and to the music fraternity here in Jamaica and abroad. I shall surely miss Peetah’s calm, unassuming and respectful manner. Rest well my son.”
Trinidadian Soca sensation Destra Garcia posted:
“The world has lost one of its greatest voices, I was so honoured to share this record with you, one of my favourite collabs ever,” the artiste said, drawing reference to her 2014 song Real Love, which features Peetah.
“Thank you for sharing your talent with me. Sleep in peace sweet Peetah. Fly now with the angels. Strength, prayers and sincere condolences go out to the Morgan family, the Morgan Heritage Band and all Peetah’s fans. Love always.”
Morgan Heritage’s last released project was The Homeland. The album which was released in 2023 to high acclaim is a Jamaican and African fusion.
The 21-track project features a slew of other internationally acclaimed artistes like Shaggy, Beenie Man, Mádé Kuti and Popcaan just to name a few.
