Nicha B pays tribute to Blaxx at SKMF: He took me from regional to international

Kittitian artiste Nicha B says Blaxx played a pivotal role in the growth of his career and credits him with paving the way for him to perform on international stages.

The versatile artiste paid tribute to the late Dexter “Blaxx” Stewart during his set at the 2023 Saint Kitts Music Festival. During a brief interview with YCG backstage at the event, Nicha B said Blaxx’ passing took a toll on his life.

“When I became Soca Monarch in 2015 he wrote my song… I went to Trinidad for three years, living with him, touring doing stuff with him and D All Starz… After Blaxx passed away it really took a toll on my life and my career so I came home and I started over.”

Nicha B said since then he’s been touring with his younger brother Byron Messiah (yes, THE Byron Messiah of Talibans fame).

“I’ve been to Jamaica, I’m doing reggae music and I’ve got a song coming up called Good Today, you know what I mean? It’s because of things that Blaxx used to say to me that you know, once the people could feel the song just do it because music is music and we’re lovers of music, we are creators, we are innovators and this is what we do. We inspire people through our music.”

Nicha B said Blaxx was a rock and a pillar in his career having created opportunities for him to perform in international spaces.

Blaxx died on March 28, 2022 at the Arima Hospital in Trinidad. He was hospitalised and being treated for COVID-19.
