Messages of prayer and support have crossed political lines in Saint Kitts and Nevis following news that Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew was hospitalised on Sunday evening and is expected to travel overseas for specialised observation and precautionary monitoring.

The Cabinet Secretariat confirmed Monday that Drew presented to the Joseph N. France General Hospital on the evening of August 30 after experiencing mild discomfort, nausea and a headache.

He was immediately admitted for observation and underwent what officials described as a thorough clinical evaluation.

After approximately 18 hours under the continuous care of doctors and specialists, the Prime Minister’s treating physicians reported that they were satisfied with his overall condition. He remained awake, alert and in stable condition, according to the official statement.

Despite those assurances, his medical team recommended that he be transported abroad for specialised observation and precautionary monitoring as a precaution. Arrangements were being made Monday to facilitate the transfer.

No diagnosis or details about where the Prime Minister would be taken for further observation were disclosed in the statement. The Government said another update on his condition would be provided at 7 p.m. Monday.

As news of Drew’s hospitalisation spread, messages of support began emerging from across the political spectrum, temporarily shifting the national conversation away from the usual divisions of party politics.

Former Prime Minister and current leader of the People’s Labour Party, Dr. Timothy Harris, was among those publicly wishing Drew a speedy recovery.

Harris described Drew’s illness as a moment when political contests should give way to shared humanity.

“There are moments when the contests of politics must give way to the greater bonds of our common humanity. This is such a moment.”

“Whatever our political differences, we are first and foremost sons and daughters of the same beloved Federation,” Harris wrote.

He said the response to a difficult moment for someone entrusted with leading the country should be one of “compassion, prayer and goodwill,” before joining citizens and residents in praying for Drew’s recovery.

“Get well soon, Prime Minister Drew,” Harris concluded.

From Nevis, Premier Mark Brantley offered a simple message of solidarity: “PM Drew our prayers are with you.”

Minister Spencer Brand added his own wishes beneath Brantley’s post, writing: “Speedy recovery Prime Minister Hon. Terrance Drew.”

The sentiments were also echoed by members of the Federal Cabinet.

Minister Konris Maynard said Cabinet members had an opportunity to visit and speak with the Prime Minister and reported that Drew was in “great spirits.”

According to Maynard, even though the Prime Minister should have been resting and focusing on his recovery, he remained engaged in the affairs of government.

“Even though he should be just relaxing and focusing on his recovery, he was still delegating what we should focus on as he returns to full health,” Maynard wrote.

“That’s a public servant who truly cares.”

Maynard said he continued to join Cabinet and the wider Federation in praying for the Prime Minister and wishing him well.

Minister Samal Duggins also joined the national outpouring of support, saying he was keeping Drew in his thoughts and prayers.

“Prime Minister, may you be strengthened, comforted, and restored to full health,” Duggins wrote.

“We are praying for a swift and complete recovery and look forward to seeing you back in good spirits, continuing the work of service to our nation.”

While concern about the Prime Minister’s health remained high Monday, the Government sought to reassure the public that the country’s affairs were continuing normally.

“The public is reassured that the business of government continues seamlessly and without interruption,” the Cabinet Secretariat said.

The official confirmation also brought some clarity amid concern surrounding Drew’s health. The Cabinet Secretariat did not identify any specific underlying medical condition, stating only the symptoms that led him to seek medical attention and the recommendation for further observation overseas.

For now, the emphasis from both Government and political figures across the Federation remains on Drew’s recovery.

And in a political environment where disagreement can often dominate the national conversation, the response to the Prime Minister’s hospitalisation has, at least for the moment, produced a different message-one of concern for his health and a collective hope that he returns home well.
