Sugar Mas 54: Road March and J’Ouvert Champions Revealed
Sugar Mas 54 promised to be Sweet to the Core, and so far, the St. Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Commission has delivered that and more.
While the Carnival season officially began weeks ago, our Sugar Mas 54 journey at Your Caribbean Guide truly started just after 4:00 a.m., when we joined thousands of revellers pouring into the streets for an epic J’Ouvert experience.
Fueled by the pulsating rhythms of the bands’ 2025 offerings, the streets became a moving soundscape, fanning the flames of passion that keep Carnival lovers coming back year after year. The battle for the coveted Road March title was every bit as intense as expected – not a runaway victory, but a measured clash of sound, stamina, musicality and crowd control.
When the road finally chose its anthem, Nu Vybes Band Int’l emerged victorious in the Road March competition with “Home Coming”, securing the title with 259.5 points after a fiercely contested showdown. KollisionBand followed just a fraction behind in second place with “TMI”, also posting 259.5 points (yes, you read that correctly), while Grand Masters claimed third place with “Rock Steady” on 256.85 points. With the competition ending in a tie at the top, the aggregate judging system was invoked to separate the finalists- underscoring just how evenly matched, electrifying, and road-driven this year’s battle truly was.
This year, Jouvert was another heavily contested title, with troupes leaning into storytelling through motion and momentum. Small troupes delivered tightly choreographed energy, while large troupes transformed the streets into rolling waves of sound and colour.
In the end, it was Excess J’Ouvert who emerged victorious in the Large Troupe category, claiming first place with “Roadwork” and an impressive 150 points. They were followed by Nu Vybes Band Int’l in second place with “Road Runners” (130 points), while Red Devils secured third place with “Jab Jab” (124 points).
In the Small Troupe category, Grand Masters GM Addix took top honours with “Bounce Around”, scoring 145 points. Kollision Band followed closely in second with “Life in Colors”(139 points), while Xtreme Nation rounded out the top three with “Ink & Dutty” (120 points).
You should be here!!!
Carnival in St. Kitts and Nevis doesn’t announce itself politely… it’s an experience you move through, one bass-filled beat, one splash of paint, one passing band at a time.
What sets Sugar Mas apart is scale without chaos, intensity without extreme exhaustion (if you know how to pace yourself) and tradition without stagnation. It is carnival with room to breathe, intimate enough that performers and spectators blur into one, yet big enough to feel (and be) world-class.
As Sugar Mas 54 continues to unfold, the tempo will shift once again from paint and powder to polish and dare I say pageantry? Monday Night Mas promises vibrant spectacle after sunset and will give way to what for many, is the penultimate carnival experience- parade day!
It’s the moment when Carnival slows just enough for you to truly see it – the details, the effort, the stories stitched into every feather and bead – before the music pulls you back into motion.
Sugar Mas 54 isn’t rushing toward a finale. It’s unfolding, layer by layer, beat by beat and if the road so far is any indication, the sweetest moments are still ahead.
