This island is at the very top of my 2024 travel wish list
I’ve never been to Jamaica and if I have my way, that problem will be addressed in 2024.
This Caribbean jewel has been at the top of my travel wish list for several years. It was my honeymoon destination of choice, but as a first time mother, the thought of leaving my then four-year-old daughter with relatives while my husband and I traipsed through the island paradise just didn’t sit well with me. As much as I wanted to go, I know I didn’t want any distractions when I finally set my wandering feet on Jamaican soil. My daughter is older now and I’m more comfortable with the idea of leaving her at home in Trinidad while we finally take our honeymoon trip to Jamrock, so plans are afoot for the Clarke’s to take the island by storm next year.
If you’ve made it this far, I’m sure you’re wondering why Jamaica occupies one of the top spots in my admittedly over-active imagination.
First and foremost, it’s the siren call of the unknown. The idea of stepping onto Jamaican soil for the first time, with its promise of uncharted experiences, is both thrilling and enchanting. From the famed shores of Seven Mile Beach to the emerald depths of the Blue Mountains, Jamaica unfolds like a captivating novel waiting for its pages to be turned.
Then, there’s the rhythm of reggae that resonates across the island. I’ve never felt the pulsating beat of this genre in its authentic birthplace, and the thought of immersing myself in the history of the island’s legendary creative landscape, fuels my anticipation.
Culinary dreams of authentic Jamaican jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, and ice cream from the famed Devon House dance in my mind. The prospect of savouring these delights at a beachside location or a hidden gem recommended by locals adds a layer of excitement to my gastronomic fantasies.
Jamaica’s rich history, too, beckons me. The tales of Maroons and pirates, the echoes of colonial influences, and the vibrant blend of cultures create a narrative that I’m eager to explore firsthand. Walking through the historic streets, I imagine feeling the weight of centuries past, now seamlessly woven into the fabric of modern Jamaica.
As someone whose desires lean towards experiential travel, Jamaica offers a lush and verdant landscape that just begs to be explored. I want to enjoy touristy things of course. I mean, who wouldn’t want to go hiking through rainforests, plunging into hidden waterfalls or snorkeling in crystal-clear waters?
I want to eat my way through the island on farm to table tours, visit the Maroon community and the Bob Marley Museum, I want to see how long it’ll take me fall flat on my butt as I try to navigate Dunn’s River… I also want to visit a fishing community early in the morning to interact with the fisherfolk, I want to join locals as they make their way to and through the market on market day, I want to meet local artisans and eat at hole in the wall, off the beaten path restaurants owned and managed by the grannies, aunties and uncles on the island. I also absolutely have to visit the Soap Factory By The Sea. These are just a few of the things that fuel my desire to visit the island and explore all it’s wonders.
Ultimately, though, it’s the intangible spirit of Jamaica that lingers in my daydreams – a warmth exuded by the people, the welcoming smiles, and the sense of community; it’s the way every Jamaican seems to harbour a deep, irrevocable love for their country. Their patriotism and confidence intrigue me… It’s the anticipation of connecting with a place that feels both exotic and familiar, like a destination that has been patiently waiting for me to arrive.
So, as I map out my travel wishlist, Jamaica stands tall, not just as a location on the map but as a beckoning adventure, a symphony of experiences yet to be lived. It’s the promise of a journey where each day unfolds a new chapter, and I, as the traveler, get to script my own tale in the heart of this Caribbean gem.
See you soon, Jamaica!
