Young Voices, Mighty Messages: Junior Calypsonians Gearing Up For Historic Showdown!
The stage is set, and anticipation is in the stratosphere as the future of calypso is preparing to raise its collective voice.
Today, Sunday, December 14, the St. Kitts Marriott Resort Atrium will come alive as the island’s most promising young performers take center stage for the Flow Junior Calypso Monarch Competition, a cherished Sugar Mas tradition that continues to nurture, refine, and spotlight the next generation of cultural ambassadors.
This year’s competition features a powerful mix of returning champions, fearless newcomers, and bold storytellers whose voices echo the hopes, concerns, and creativity of the nation’s youth. Across both the primary and secondary categories, these young artistes are using calypso not only as entertainment, but as a vehicle for advocacy, reflection, and social change.
Among the standout stories this year is the much-anticipated debut of Coryn Clarke, performing under her own name. Taking the number one spot in the order of appearance, Coryn enters the arena with “Don’t Shut We Up,” a stirring and heartfelt appeal for children to be encouraged to speak openly, honestly, and without fear. Her message is as relevant as it is courageous, giving voice to countless young people who long to be heard in their homes, schools, and communities.
Also drawing great anticipation is the return of Adiaha Inanga, the reigning Primary School Monarch. Performing last in the primary lineup, Adiaha brings her trademark energy to the stage once more with “Screen Time,” a clever and timely commentary on childhood in the digital age.
The primary segment is bursting with energy, featuring a diverse cast of performers such as Mighty Adonai with “The Letter.” Mighty Zen, a young calypsonian who has already become a mainstay in the local calypso fraternity will be competing with her 2025 offering, “Micro Chip In Mi Brain.” Zen is no stranger to the spotlight, having secured second place in last year’s Junior Calypso Monarch Competition and repeating that remarkable achievement as the 1st Runner-Up in Nevis’ Culturama Calypso Competition earlier this year. Also taking the stage are Prince Khi with “School Children Say” and Chase the Dream with “Young Bull.”
Each artiste brings a unique perspective, some playful, some provocative, all passionately delivered.
Their songs reveal the inner worlds of today’s children: their humor, their pressures, their dreams, and the issues they observe around them. It is a reminder that young people are not just witnesses to the world, they are interpreters of it.
Secondary School Performers Take on the Big Topics
The secondary category promises equal brilliance, featuring reigning monarch Mighty J, alongside powerful performers such as Lil Soca Zaeke, Lady Faith, Mighty QJ, Prodigy, Prince DJ, Star Boy Nicholas, and Dequan.
Their song choices reflect an impressive maturity, tackling themes such as folklore preservation, crime and violence, financial responsibility, and social justice. This group represents the next wave of cultural storytellers: sharp, reflective, and unafraid to confront national issues through melody and metaphor.
The FLOW Junior Calypso Monarch is a celebration of legacy. It is an immersive classroom where children learn discipline, courage, creativity, and the power of their own voices. Each performer, whether debuting or returning, strengthens the cultural future of St. Kitts and Nevis simply by stepping onto that stage.
As Sugar Mas 54 unfolds, these young artistes remind us that calypso is alive, evolving, and thriving in the hands of its youngest guardians. Their voices are fresh, their messages are meaningful, and their performances promise to be unforgettable.
Admission is FREE, making this event a perfect opportunity for families, schools, and cultural enthusiasts to come out in full support.
